KARL MARX AND THE LIMITS
OF MONETARY POLITICS
All the illusions of the monetary system arise from the failure to perceive
that money, though a physical object with distinct properties, represents a
social relation of production.

WHEN FRIEDRICH ENGELS returned home from the Manchester Stock
Exchange on Friday, September 26, 1856, he was brimming with excite-
ment. As a successful investor on behalf of his family business, Engels had
been a respected member of the exchange for years. But that day the ordi-
nary hum of the market had taken on a different tune. Having kept an
ear to the floor of the stock exchange for weeks, Engels was sure a storm
was brewing in the transatlantic credit markets. He immediately dashed
off a letter to his friend and political confrère Karl Marx in London. "The
money market clouds [Geldmarktswolken] are gathering in a very som-
bre way indeed," Engels announced with delight. "This time there'll be
a day of wrath [dies irae] such as has never been seen before... all the
propertied classes in the soup, complete bankruptcy of the bourgeoisie,
war and profligacy to the nth degree."2 Upon receiving the letter, Marx
