Alfred Mitchell Innes (1909) Notes on the East

In correspondence with Sir Edward Grey, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, A.

Mitchell Innes raises the question of natives (Zulu people) representation in the new

constitution of South Africa. In fact, they were excluded.

In one lengthy letter A. Mitchell Innes urges Sir Edward Grey to read his Notes on

the East, which consists of five sections and -17,500 words

►Mitchell-Innes (1910):

"The relations of debtor and creditor are the most important artificial relations

which subsist between human beings - I say artificial to distinguish them from the

relations of love and motherhood etc - and law of debt transcends, perhaps, in

importance any other human law."

"Ideal Justice is the combination of the three essential elements of Law, Religion

and Custom, each in its due proportion.
