Random Harvest

Charles Rainier's family feared him lost along with so many of Britain's youth
during the First World War. But two years after he was reported MIA,
he appears in a Liverpool hospital with no memory of his missing years.
Even after marriage and a life of relative success, he can't recall his time
on the battlefield—until the first bombs of the Second World War begin
to fall. Suddenly, his memories flood back. Recollections of a violent battlefield,
a German prison, and a passionate affair all threaten to fracture the peaceful life
he has worked so hard to create.

映画を観たのは、１０代。 私の大好きな作品です。
本の虫だった私は翻訳本 「心の旅路」を読んだことを覚えています。

今に至るまでにも何度か見ているせいか、
映画の印象が強すぎるせいか。

記憶にあるのは作品の冒頭だけ。。。
　　　「わたし」が偶然、列車で乗り合わせた紳士を観察し、
　　　車窓からは美しいイギリスの郊外の風景が。。。
―　もちろん、言葉は記憶にありませんので心象イメージです。

でも、映画ではこの場面がありません。
ず～っと気になって、私の記憶違いなのでは？

原作も映画同様に品のある素晴らしいものでした。
私の記憶も間違いがなく、安堵。
映画はメロドラマの部分に焦点をあてていますが、
原作の印象は、Paula の描写が少なく
まさに、主人公 Charles の心の旅路です。

英語表現は、難しくはないので
機会があれば、是非読んでみる事をお勧めします。　　(^^♪

原作の最後、映画とは"場所"が異なりますが、
作品の題名 「 Random Harvest 」の意味を示唆する箇所があります。

   But she didn't answer; already she was rushing down the slope.
He saw her in time to rise to his feet; she stopped then, several yards
away, and for a few seconds both were staring at each other, hard
and still and silent.  Then he whispered something I couldn't hear;
but I knew in a flash that the gap was closed, that the random years
were at an end, that the past and the future would join.  She knew
this too, for she ran into his arms calling out: "Oh, Smithy―Smithy
―it may not be too late!"
