I close this book by looking back on one of the most important books in my own intellectual development, John Blatt's Dynamic Economic Systems: A Post-Keynesian Approach (Blatt 1983).4 Blatt was not, in fact, an economist, but a mathematician who, after a distinguished career in mathematics and physics, was accidentally exposed to advanced Neoclassical economics. He was horrified by what he saw, and especially, by its obsession with equilibrium modelling. Speaking with the authority of a leading figure in mathematical dynamics, he observed in the Introduction to Dynamic Economic Systems that:

At present, the state of our dynamic economics is more akin to a crawl than to a walk, to say nothing of a run. Indeed, some may think that capitalism as a social system may disappear before its dynamics are understood by economists. (Blatt 1983, pp. 4–5, emphasis added)

When I first read this in 1991, I thought it was a good piece of hyperbole. I now regard it as a depressingly prescient prediction. Given the role that Neoclassical economists have played in humanity making only trivial responses to the challenge of climate change to date, the social system that gets us through that challenge – if we do get through it – will be far more a command than a market economy. For this reason, I regard Neoclassical economics as not merely a bad methodology for economic analysis, but as an existential threat to the continued existence of capitalism – and human civilization in general. It has to go.
