Conservation of the old modes of production in unaltered form, was, on the contrary, the first condition of existence for all earlier industrial classes. Constant revolutionizing of production, uninterrupted disturbance of all social conditions, everlasting uncertainty and agitation distinguish the bourgeois epoch from all earlier ones. All fixed, fast frozen relations, with their train of ancient and venerable prejudices and opinions, are swept away, all new-formed ones become antiquated before they can ossify. All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses his real condition of life and his relations with his kind. (Marx and Engels 1848 [2017], p. 54, emphasis added)

How did Marx’s exciting portrayal of capitalism lose out to Say’s vapid vision?

Notes
4  Blatt's exposition of Goodwin's growth cycle model was much clearer than Goodwin's original, and this model became the basis of my model of Minsky's Financial Instability Hypothesis. Blatt's explanations of the mathematical instability of general equilibrium and the fallacies in expected utility theory are also first class.

The bicentenary of The Wealth of Nations has passed, and so has the centenary of the neoclassical revolution in economics. Yet the present state of dynamic economic theory leaves very much to be desired and appears to show little sign of significant improvement in the near future. Structured into 5 main topics, the main purpose of 'Dynamic Economics Systems 'is to present arguments for this contention and to start developing the tools which are needed to make progress in understanding truly dynamic economic systems. First published in 2000.

Chapter 10.

Schematic trade cycle models: part II 189
A. The Hicks model 189
B. The Frisch model 198
C. The Goodwin model 204
D. Mathematical appendix 211

Chapters 9 and 10 are devoted to the most important "schematic," as opposed to detailed econometric, models of the trade cycle. The accelerator-multiplier model of Samuelson and the inventory cycle model of Metzler are discussed in chapter 9. Chapter 10 takes up in tum the Hicks model, the Frisch model, and the Goodwin model.
