Could we start off by explaining in as plain terms as possible what GRE IFL is?
W:
Yeah, so just to be sure, I have actually been using the term sellers inflation rather than greed, ifl.
But what I'm thinking about here is that there have been very, very large cost shocks that the ways in which corporations have reacted to these massive cost stocks is to protect their profit margins.
So they have not only passed on the costs, but they have protected their profit margins, which means that you need to increase your prices a bit more and some corporations could even increases pri increase prices in ways that increase their profits, which has to do, do with the dynamic of competition That changed in light of these emergencies.
And it has also to do with the acceptability of price hikes on the end of, of consumers where if they see, um, on the news that grain prices are exploding, energy prices are excluding, there might be more billing to pay higher prices, um, than they would be in normal times.
C:
Well, that's interesting because in conventional economics term, these companies are behaving irrationally. If you want to expand your market share, if there's real competition, if people are struggling to buy baked beans and I'm selling baked beans, then what I do is I cut the price to increase my market share.
So why are these companies not doing that?
W:
Yeah, that's exactly the right question. Um, and I would argue that before the pandemic in the same concentrated kind of markets, very large firms with very large market shares would have, um, behaved exactly as you're saying. They would have tried to, um, undercut their competitors or at least keep prices stable and not start hiking prices because that would mean that they would lose, um, their market share to their competitors. However,
if there is such a gigantic cost shock that signals to all players in the market, that now is the moment to increase prices, then they can increase prices without being worried about losing market shares to their competitors because they expect that their competitors would behave in the same way, protect their profit margins, hence increase prices. Now, if they're in the game of increasing prices, there can be a dynamic where they also start increasing prices more than costs,
in ways that can actually enhance profit margins in certain areas.
