Q:
you think
about
let me ask you stephanie because people
say to me
if i tell them i had this interview with
people about being asian american
they'll
they'll assume that there's some lefty
slant to it but there isn't
i literally was having the same
interview anybody would have
with asian americans they're question
and my coverage of
george floyd was the same in your world
you are looking at economic principles
that you would like people to consider
or reconsider or maybe consider for the
first time
how easily are you discounted or not
discounted because of political
affiliation?
Kelton:
well it i guess it depends to some
extent uh
you know the audience but i think with
the book i made a very
deliberate uh decision to try to avoid
the politics and to write a book
that um told people that this is a way
of
understanding the nature of the monetary
system that exists
today and the mechanics of the
government budget why it's not like a
household budget and that this is a
message that is aimed
at empowering all of us to see through
the myths and misunderstandings to
disabuse us and to allow us
greater scope for a more productive
political debate.
recognizing that we're still going to
have differences if i tell you there's
more
there's more fiscal space out there than
we've been led to believe.
one reader is going to say oh i want to
use that fiscal space
to do tax cuts or build a wall or do
whatever you know.
another reader is going to read that and
say oh this is a hopeful message and i
hear that a lot
right because i was fearful i had a lot
of anxiety about deficits and debt and i
did believe that all of this was
ultimately going to lead to a
harsher future for my kids and grandkids.
and so they hear
things differently they say wait a
minute if we can do more
then we could do education and we could
do health care.
and we can do so
it really does i tried very hard to
leave it up to the reader and the
subtitle of the book said building a
people's economy(Creating an Economy for the People ).
and and i'm not there to tell the reader
what that economy is supposed to look
like and i tell them that in the pages
of the book this is for
voters to decide this is for the
electorate this is for the will of the
people.
to exercise at the at the voting booth
and through pressure on our
elected officials you know these are the
things that we understand are possible.
and these are the things that we want to
see so
i um you know and i get calls i get
calls from republicans
in congress sometimes and they're
staffers i get more calls from democrats.
but
um i i think that there there's
definitely
politically and understanding that you
know it's a framework that both sides
can take advantage of to just think
through
the political decisions about the budget
and and what's possible.
um and that you know there's a way for
for this to benefit
broadly both sides of the political
aisle.
Q:

anthony can i ask you a question about
your experience on um
giving talks versus on social media now
having given talks in economics
departments they're they're rough
um but um i
find that in for the as a general rule
as a political scientist giving a talk
to a political science audience
there's a lot more listening than
sometimes you get on social media even
from fellow
academics right that that social media
is much more of a
um how dare you say that sort of world
it's much more it's just certainly more
strident
now again economics is a little
different um in
political science talks in which you get
somebody saying okay it's interesting
that you said that
now i'm thinking about it this way can
you explain as opposed to
no wrong liberal hack conservative
secret conservative you got a lot secret
conservative
in political science twitter um so how
do you experience it
i get everything i get the left says i'm
a trojan horse for the
right the right says i'm a communist and
i get everything
different than in when you're is that
different when you're presenting
oh when i'm present listen you know it
it's kind of interesting because
uh you know we haven't been doing all
that many conferences right i still will
give some
papers i i'm giving uh keynotes at
social science
conferences this year which is a
different thing for me usually i just
do you know econ uh so we'll see how
that goes those are coming up in the
next couple of months
um but most of my public speaking is
actually to folks in the investment
community
there are finance people because they
actually interestingly they don't care
so much
whether it's you're associated with the
left or the right they have money on the
line and they don't want to lose it and
if you have a better story
about how things work and a different
understanding of
interest rates and inflation and the
relationship between deficits and
you know interest rates something if if
you bring something that they think
uh is worthy of consideration and might
help them avoid
placing a bet a costly you know that
that's going to cost them
a lot of money they're out there ready
to listen and so i do
i and i find those audiences a lot of
fun because
they really don't get so riled up about
the politics of it all
they're happy to have just that sort of
baseline
discussion about monetary operations and
really clunky wonky stuff
but then i do you know i'll walk into a
rotary club and i'll talk to a
a bunch of rotarians and i love to do
that as well and
uh you know i i have had almost nothing
but good experiences
for a couple of decades really of doing
this kind of stuff and
i think i've i've learned a lot about
how to lay the argument out because i
can anticipate
where the pushback is going to come i
can address it early in the talk before
it
while it's popping into the listener's
mind here it comes
kelton is addressing that and so i end
up
um you know i end up i think at the end
with a lot of people just
you know in a big circle around me
saying uh
that that was incredibly interesting and
how do i learn more about that so
i'm curious about this sorry sorry
charlie i was just going to say i'm
curious about this question from
from sarah's perspective because how do
you navigate the idea that you're you're
representing
