Press Rewind: Monopoly's almost-forgotten creator never got her dues

If most of your family memories of playing Monopoly involved hours-long squabbles over paper cash and who got to be the Scottie dog, you probably won't be surprised to hear this game has been tearing people apart for generations.

Long before the beloved thimble and hotels on Park Place, Monopoly was crafted to teach economic theory. Of course, that may sound boring to some, but it became a favorite around colleges, in parlor rooms and among Atlantic City Quakers.

All fun and games aside, the creation of Monopoly would go on to cheat the original creator out of her royalties, and its modern iteration would cause a feud between two families.

And not the fun kind where Steve Harvey makes faces at dumb answers.

The prevailing lore behind Monopoly was that it was created by an unemployed Charles Darrow of Philadelphia after the Great Depression and that the Atlantic City spaces were inspired by his travels to the shore. But contemporary research and a lawsuit show that's not exactly how it happened.

People are also reading…

Actually, that's not how it happened at all.

All games and stories have a start, and Monopoly's begins with Elizabeth Magie Phillips.

Mary Pilon, author of the book "Monopolists: Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal behind the World's Favorite Board Game," researched the game for five years. She has written extensively for publications such as The New York Times, The Guardian and Smithsonian Magazine about the game's all-but-forgotten original creator who patented the first version of the game in 1904.

Phillips, who often went by "Lizzie," was born in Macomb, Illinois, in 1866. Her father, James Magie, a newspaper publisher and abolitionist, accompanied Abraham Lincoln in the 1850s as he debated with Stephen Douglas.

Phillips was an anomaly for her era and remained unmarried until she was 44 years old. In Washington D.C., she worked as a stenographer and secretary, but she had a penchant for creative writing as well as performing as a comedian.

When her father introduced her to economist Henry George's writing, specifically the book "Progress and Poetry," she became an ardent supporter of the single-tax system.

The system, or "Georgism," is a philosophy of taxing only land — effectively shifting the tax burden to wealthy landlords — and exempting everything else.

In a world of Rockafellers and Vanderbilts, Phillip's development of The Landlord's Game pushed back at the wealthy elite.

On Jan. 5, 1904, Phillips patented the game, stating the objective of the game was for players to "obtain as much wealth or money as possible. The player who has the greatest amount of wealth at the end of the game after a certain predetermined number of circuits of the board have been made being the winner."

The Landlord's Game was made with two sets of rules: one in which anti-monopolists were rewarded when wealth was created and a monopolist set where the goal was to create, well, monopolies.

Yet it's the monopolist set that influenced the modern-day version of the game.

The corners of the square-shaped "Landlord's Game," included a poor house, a public park, a globe honoring George and another that belonged to "Owner Lord Blue Blood London England."

Properties on the board, although unnamed, boast their rent or for-sale price with a bank, public treasury, a railroad, and wages in the center.

The game became a hit among left-wing intellectuals at places like the Wharton School of Finance and Economy at the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University and Columbia University. In Atlantic City, Quakers liked the game so much they added their own neighborhood flair to it.

In 1923, Phillips would submit another patent for the game, with slightly different corners and named properties such as "George Street" "Goat Alley" "Rickety Row" and "Poverty Place."

It wouldn't be until almost 10 years later in 1932 that a Philadelphia businessman named Charles Todd and his wife Olive would sit down with family friend, Charles Darrow, and his wife, Esther, to play what everyone called "the monopoly game."

On this night, Todd introduced the Darrows to the Atlantic City version of "The Landlord's Game," and the Philadelphia man was taken with it. The couples began playing together more with the Todds teaching them more advanced rules.

When Darrow asked for Todd to write down the rules, he scribbled them down.

In 1935, Darrow would go on to sell the version of the game Todd taught him to Parker Brothers and supposedly, never spoke to the Todds again.

The game sold more than 270,000 copies in the first year and more than 1,750,000 the next. Though it was a commercial success and Darrow happily reaped in the royalties, it was far from Phillip's original game that rallied against capitalistic greed.

Darrow was happy to take credit, too, and according to an article from The Guardian, when he was asked by a newspaper how he came up with such a fantastic idea, he described it was a "freak" and "entirely unexpected and illogical."

This wouldn't sit with Phillips who took her story and proof that she invented the game 32 years earlier to The Washington Post and The Washington Evening Star in January 1936.

"I conceived the game of Landlord to interest people in the single-tax plan of the great economist Henry George," Phillips, who was then in her 60s and headmistress of the Henry George School of Social Science, told The Post.

The article goes on to report that although Phillips sold her patent rights to Parker Brothers for $500, she received no royalties from the game at all.

Although Phillips did go on to invent other games for Parker Brothers, they didn't have quite the same longevity as Monopoly has. Time would soon forget the graying Phillips.

Monopoly historian Pilon found that in the 1940 census before Phillips died she listed her occupation as "maker of games."

"Game inventors just didn't get that in 1935; she died in 1948, and up and through during her entire lifetime she and Darrow were given joint credit for the idea behind Monopoly," Phil Orbanes, a former Parker Brothers executive and Monopoly historian told CBS News in 2015.

"After she passed away, then, yes, she was forgotten," he said.

Phillips wouldn't get her comeuppance until 1973, when a San Francisco State University professor, Ralph Anspach, created the "Anti-Monopoly game." The Parker Brothers would hit Anspach with a trademark infringement lawsuit, but not before hitting them back with what happened to Phillips.

Ten years later, Anspach would win the U.S. Supreme Court case and he went on to write "The Billion Dollar Monopoly." The Anspach Archives Collection, written by Anspach himself, credits both Phillips and the Quakers who taught Atlantic City Friends School as the unsung creators.

Writing for Smithsonian Magazine, Pilon notes the version we gather around to play these days has taught "generations to cheer when someone goes into bankruptcy."

Phillips could have never possibly dreamed that game pieces would be peeled off of McDonald's French fries or that people everywhere, in over 40 languages, could play on a game board or on their phone.

Would Phillips be happy how her game has shaped out and how deeply entrenched the game is in our pop culture? Or would she have been, for better or worse, happy to see how the game has brought families and friends together for the common cause of competitively crushing each other in a paper banking system?

We'll let you speculate on your own.

Press Rewind:Monopoly

Landlord's Game

Monopolists: Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal behind the World's Favorite Board Game "の著者メアリー・ピロンは、このゲームについて5年間調査した。
