Understanding the valuation of monetary instruments requires three actors: one issuer (simplest case: issues and redeems instrument at face value), 2 bearers (circulate instrument at price P>=<FV). Mechanics that ensure, or prevent, P=FV are a core elements of monetary study.‬

‪Note, there are 3 levels of analysis: ‬
‪1-what goes on among the public (why does Paul accept monetary instrument from Joe at a specific value P?)‬
‪2-what goes on between public and the issuer (channels of redemption, price at which redemption occurs)‬
‪3-interaction between the two.‬
‪Now apply that to bitcoins‬
‪1- There is no means of redemption so no anchor is provided by an issuer(there is no issuer)‬
‪2- Supply mechanic is random relative to the need of the system‬
‪2- As a consequence Paul and Joe are left to determine P on their own and P can fluctuate widely‬
‪Now apply that to stable coins‬
‪1- Issuer provides a means of redemption via conversion into something else‬
‪2- As long as conversion at par holds that provides a strong anchor for P to converge to FV‬
‪More complicated cases involves an issuer that does not redeem at the the specified face value or that redeems at different prices depending on the channel of redemption. Further complications occurs if the monetary instruments as a commodity value that can rise above face value.‬
‪Take the gold coin called guinea that had an official value of 20s. For the first 30 years it traded at P above official value in England because gold value was higher than 20s. HM Treasury redeemed guinea at P making effectively P = FV with FV higher from official value‬
‪Things get even more complicated from there redemption channels had, for a while, different FVs. Treasury accepted guinea at a different price for taxes and for debts owed to Treasury. Also official value changed quite widely in the late 1600s to stabilize at 21s.‬
‪Another example is European private banks in the 15th. They issued monetary instruments in the form of accounts that promised redemption into reliable coins. When promise was broken, funds in the account traded at a discount. Close parallel with current events.‬
