first up on last call an important and probably a little controversial question is the 2024 election driving the Federal Reserve sudden pivot to talk about cutting interest rates that is not our take listen to what former white house chief Economist Joe Leia said earlier on squawkbox I do think the election is a factor and politics I think was a was involved here I can tell you that at least since 1984 uh the FED has never begun an easing campaign aign during a presidential election year uh they started before the election year but not during and I wouldn't be surprised that part of it has to do with the fact that the further they start to talk about cutting and the sooner they start cutting in 24 maybe at the margin I'll give a little bit more political cover all right now that being said Leia later kind of clarified his position the board I think made a decision to Pivot I do believe politics are part of it we do have four Biden Point these that are there and if it wasn't politics then their forecast should have shown more a bigger reduction in in inflation and it wasn't there now again as we have said many times we are not a political show we don't root for either the red or blue teams the only color that we care about is green but could Leia at least directionally be correct the FED sudden pivot surprising a number of investors and has sparked a huge move in stocks could it be motivated in part by the timeline of the election maybe a desire to actually avoid appearance or you know avoid the appearance of influencing the election he said it's almost Christmas in other words If the Fed is going to move let them move early rather than closer to the election let's talk about it with our leadoff panel tonight that is kkm financial founder and CEO Jeff kilberg
and professor of economics and public policy at Stonybrook University Stephanie Kelton Stephanie also the author of the deficit myth modern monetary Theory and the birth of the people's economy thank you both for joining us on last call after that rather sloppy open by me apologies uh Stephanie do you do you think the FED pivot in in any way is motivated by politics?
okay I think absolutely unequivocally and without a doubt the answer is no.
um are you sure?
I think we are honestly at the point where we're letting this constant compulsion to turn everything into politics to politicize absolutely everything just destroy our faculties for critical thinking I I think that from where I said this is a crazy proposition I think if you want to understand what's motivating the FED it's pretty straightforward the FED is moving closer to the market it's not paying attention to the calendar it's been data driven all along and the FED is finally compet ating a bit to where the market has been which is to say you've overdone this and you're going to be cutting sooner than you think you are and I think that is there's nothing more to it than that.
